Knowing your Camera Flash – Compact and External
Flash Photography with SLR Digital Cameras
Nowadays, most camera models have built an in built flash both on the compact and SLR digital cameras. This makes it very easy for the photographer to compensate for low lighting conditions by a quick press of a button to capture the image with flash compensation.
If you are an amateur and you are indoors and the light is low, if you don’t have the correct lenses for low lighting then its recommended to use the flash to compensate for this. This may also be used in outdoors where there is harsh shadows on the subjects face. A flash may be able to compensate depending on the ability of the flash unit.
The flash on a compact camera as compared to a SLR Speedlight will vary significantly. The compact model is versatile and is excellent for travelling and taking snaps of your favourite holiday spots, quick portrait photos of family and friends.
If you are a more professional photographer most likely you will have a quality camera and have picked up a speedlight to create much better images. You will notice the difference when shooting in the dark with a compact flash and the better functions of a speedlight. Shadows are more likely to dissipate using the more expensive equipment.
These days the flash models on the digital compact cameras have catered for slow sync and red eyed reduction. The more advanced speedlight have far more functions available and need a little practice to understand the full capability of the unit.
The external speedlight is required in wedding flash photography, real estate photography, travel photography, portraits where lighting is paramount in creating the best photograph. The external units have an inbuilt sensor for measuring ambient lighting, distance and optical parameters. There capability to pick up on lighting is excellent and adjustments for low light can be done via quick adjustments on the speedlight.
In highsight, the small compact digital camera with flash is great for travelling, daily snaps where you don’t require brilliant photography resolution. If you need higher quality images than you will require an external flash or flashes pending on the type of photography you are shooting.
